Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower Airport Parking Structure – August 2014 Update
Rain or shine, construction is progressing on the Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower Airport Terminal, Parking Garage, and Rental Car Agency Center. The parking garage is the last structure of the three that has yet to reach its final size. Crews are preparing for the two remaining pours of the 3rd floor slab while forms are being moved to the east end of the garage to start the 4th floor. The first pour for the 4th floor slab should start within a week. Electrical crews continue to work on the 1st floor in addition to hanging fixtures on the 2nd floor and both ramps.
The parking garage ramps are nearing completion and both are currently being worked on. The crews are ready to pour the connection points at each of the parking garage floors and also where the ramps meet the street. Similar to the ramps, the elevator and stair case towers are also nearing completion. The South East and South West towers are currently being prepped to have their roofs poured.
Looking toward the South from the upper levels of the parking garage, you will see the Rental Car Agency Center roof covered in corrugated sheet metal with crews prepping to install the roof membrane. The exterior of the Rental Car Agency Center is beginning to reveal a taste of its final design as each precast panel is installed. Framing materials are already onsite, ready for the crews to begin work on the interior.
Earlier in August, the first halves of both pedestrian canopies were delivered onsite to be prepped, painted, and installed. After all of the preparation work was complete, it took less than one day to install the pedestrian canopies connected to the Terminal. With half of both canopies installed, the last step is to install the glass before the traffic is switched to the other side the airport loop road. Due to the scale of the pedestrian canopies, the second halves will not arrive onsite until October when the traffic has been switched and more progress has been made with construction.
Glass will be installed on the pedestrian canopies this month, in addition to finishing the final concrete work on the 3rd floor slab. October will see the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2 which includes switching traffic over to the new lane adjacent to the Terminal, starting construction on the exit plaza, finishing the spine road on the North side of the parking garage, and reconstructing the short term parking lot with the long term lot. The final pours on the 4th floor slab should wrap up in November with crews transitioning to pouring safety barriers on the perimeter of each floor in the parking garage.
Stay tuned for future construction updates at the Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower Airport.
